When it comes to makeup products now a days, everyone has so many products. You can search online and all you will see is Lady’s and Men with huge makeup collects. Don’t get me wrong i have quite a bit of makeup my self. But this post isn’t about makeup hording, its about knowing when to though out expired makeup products.
Over the past 2 weeks i changed my whole makeup setup. Meaning i had to go though my makeup to transfer it. During that process iv notice there were products i was just note using or the texture/smell had changed. It was time for me to clean out!
You might be asking yourself, “why is she doing this post”? The answer for that is “I Care”! A lot of people are unaware about expiring makeup and sum lean the hard way when there face breaks out. So in this post i will go through all of the different types of makeup products and give you my estimation on when you should just toss it.

Mascara: 3-6 Months
This time starts right when you open the product. If you use your mascara like a huge percentage of people (meaning double dipping and never cleaning the mascara wand ) though out after 3 months. If you clean your mascara wand after and between every use to the lashes it will last 6 months.
– Cleaning your mascara wand will help your mascara go on cleaner (less clumps)
Foundation: 1 year – 1.5 years
If it is a solid powder foundation it will last longer than a liquid foundation.
Concealer: 1 year – 1.5 years
This really depends on how you use the product. If you have a pot concealer use a clean brush because your fingers can lead to bacteria going into the product. If you have a applicator concealer this is a liquid form, meaning it will only last so long. Make sure to keep the wand clean.
Powder: 1 year – 2 years
Starting with the one that doesn’t last long is cream blush. Cream blush will last up to a year.(think of it as a lip gloss) because it is more liquid base and the way people use it (finger dipping). Next is pressed, this can last up to 1.5 years. But if you start to see solid color changes forming i suggest tossing it and getting a new one. Last is loose powder and this type of powder can last up to 2 years (or even longer). That is because it don’t have that wear on it like the rest.
Eyeshadow: 1.5 years – 2 years
So pressed eyeshadow can last the 2 years. But cream eye shadows is about 1.5 years and that is only if you take really good care of it (make sure that lid is on tight).
Eyeliner: 6 months – 1 year
If you are using a liquid eyeliner you have about 6 months to use it. I have noticed that after that time they start to smell or get really dry… Same goes for gel eyeliners. But gel eyeliners can quit on you at anytime because if that lid isn’t closed tight it will dry up on you. Last eye liner is a pencil. this can last up to a year or longer. Make sure to sharpen it before every use, that helps with taking of bacteria and giving you a nice sharp to work with.
Lip Stick: 18months or longer
For me this item has forgiveness. I never had a lipstick get old or dry up on me. (mainly because i use them up before this happens) If you haven’t used it in a while you can used isopropyl alcohol (70% or higher) to clean the surface of the lip stick.
Lip Gloss:18 months
This is one of those items that you just know when its old. The color turns not true to the original color, it starts to smell bad or you can see the product separating. This are top signs that your lip gloss is old…Toss it!
Nail Polish: 2+ years
Nail polish can hold up for a long time. Keep that top closed tight and shake up regularly. If you start to notice clumping or a realllly bad smell toss it.
Makeup Brushes: Weekly – every other week cleaning
Clean makeup brushes is the main thing to have your makeup go one smoothly. It also helps so you don’t break out from the bacteria, dirt and oily that is left on your brushes. If you don’t spot clean your brushes weekly cleaning will be needed. But if you do spot clean you can deep clean every other week or so.
